critiques

I offer paid critiques of young adult and middle-grade fiction.

Reasons why you wouldn't want me to critique your manuscript:

  • I will tell you "everything." That can be daunting.
  • I have been teaching creative writing at the graduate level for 17 years, so I'm not good at doing anything less than graduate-level critique. I can't dumb it down.

Reasons why you would want me to critique your manuscript:

  • I will tell you "everything." That can help you take your work to the next level.
  • I have been teaching creative writing at the graduate level for 17 years, so I'm not good at doing anything less than graduate-level critique. You may receive the honest, rigorous feedback you've been looking for.
The following are quotes from student evaluations of my critical work:
  • "I cannot think of a single way Martine could have improved upon the work she did with me."
  • "It has been a joy to study with Martine. She challenged and empowered me to re-draft in every way that I needed. Martine, I thank you for investing both your talent and effort in me this semester!"
  • "Martine approached my work with thoughtfulness, care and enthusiasm. [She] was always clear and thorough with her feedback and communication. In her textual and artistic criticism, Martine gave me detailed advice in her packet letter and margin notes. Particularly helpful was Martine's detailed advice on how to create memorable character traits and specific ideas to get me thinking about how to up the stakes in my plot and connect certain storylines to the overall theme of the story."

If you are interested in this service, please email me. We will have a "chat" and decide if we can work together. I charge $5 per page, payment in advance. I am a luddite and have no idea how to use PayPal or Venmo, so you will have to send me a cheque or money order. After you have received my critique and have had some time to process the feedback, I offer a follow-up email exchange.
